Place the bed first
Put the headboard on the wall you see when you walk in, ideally not under a window. Leave at least 24 inches on each side so both sleepers can get in and out, and 30 inches at the foot if there is a dresser opposite.
Colors that help you rest
Bedrooms work best in low-contrast palettes: warm whites, oatmeal, sage, dusty blue or soft taupe. Save strong contrast for small things — a black lamp base, a dark picture frame. If you love a bold color, use it on the wall behind the headboard only; you will not see it when you are lying down.

Try it freeLayer the bed
- Start with neutral sheets, then add a duvet or quilt in a slightly different tone.
- Two sleeping pillows, two euro or standard shams, and one or two accent pillows are plenty.
- A throw folded across the bottom third adds texture without clutter.
Lighting
Matching nightstands with matching lamps give instant symmetry. Lamps should be roughly at shoulder height when you sit up in bed. Wall sconces free up nightstand space in a small room. Add a dimmer or smart bulbs for the overhead light.
Storage without clutter
Clutter is what makes most bedrooms feel stressful. Use nightstands with drawers instead of open shelves, an upholstered bench or baskets at the foot of the bed, and under-bed boxes for out-of-season clothes. Keep surfaces to three objects each.
Where to spend
Spend on the mattress and bedding first — you feel them every night. A new headboard, lamps and a rug change the look most for the money. Art can come last.

FAQ
What color is best for a bedroom?
Soft, low-contrast colors like warm white, greige, sage green and muted blue are the easiest to sleep in. Use darker or bolder colors on the headboard wall only.
How do I make my bedroom look bigger?
Use a bed with legs, wall-mounted or slim nightstands, curtains hung close to the ceiling, one large rug and a mirror opposite the window.
