Small bedroom ideas

In a small bedroom every piece has to earn its place. These tricks make it feel larger and calmer.

Choose the right bed

A bed on legs shows more floor, which reads as more space. If you need storage more than airiness, pick a bed with drawers underneath instead of adding a dresser. In very narrow rooms, pushing one side of the bed against the wall frees a clear walkway.

Slim, light furniture

  • Nightstands 15–18 inches wide, or floating shelves instead of nightstands.
  • Wall-mounted or plug-in sconces free up surface space.
  • Furniture with open legs and rounded corners feels lighter and is easier to walk around.

Try it free

Go vertical

Tall, narrow storage uses height instead of floor. Shelves above the door or bed (securely mounted) hold books and baskets. Hang curtains from just below the ceiling and let them fall to the floor — it makes the ceiling look higher.

Colors and light

Light walls reflect more light, but the real trick is low contrast: walls, bedding and curtains in similar tones blur the room's edges. A large mirror opposite or beside the window doubles the daylight.

One rug, one statement

Use one rug big enough to sit under the bottom two-thirds of the bed rather than several small ones. Pick one statement — a headboard, a piece of art, or bedding — and keep everything else quiet.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A bulky dresser and two big nightstands fighting for the same wall.
  • Lots of small decor pieces — in a small room they read as clutter.
  • Dark, heavy curtains hung at the window frame, which shrink the wall.
  • Several small rugs that chop the floor into pieces.

Budget tips

Decluttering is free and makes the biggest difference. After that, bedding and lighting change the feel of a small room most for the money.

FAQ

Where should I put the bed in a small bedroom?

Centered on the wall facing the door if you can keep 24 inches on each side; otherwise push one side against a wall to keep a clear path.
