Home office ideas

The best home office makes it easy to start working and easy to stop. Comfort first, then looks.

Desk placement

Put the desk where daylight comes from the side, not behind your screen (glare) or behind you (reflections on video calls). Facing into the room instead of a wall makes a small office feel bigger and gives a better background on camera.

Ergonomics you will actually notice

  • Desk height around 28–30 inches for most people; elbows at about 90 degrees when typing.
  • Top of the monitor at or slightly below eye level, an arm's length away.
  • An office chair with adjustable seat height and lumbar support is the one item worth stretching the budget for.

Lighting for long days

Use three sources: daylight, a ceiling light, and a desk lamp aimed at your work (not at the screen). For video calls, a soft light in front of you, slightly above eye level, beats any webcam upgrade.

Storage that keeps the desk clear

Closed storage — a low cabinet or credenza — hides paper and cables; open shelves are for books and a few objects you like. Mixing a tall bookcase with a low cabinet gives you both, and a cable tray under the desk solves most of the mess.

Make it feel like a room, not a corner

A rug defines the work zone, a piece of art behind you makes calls look better, and a comfortable side chair gives you a second place to think or read. If the office is also a guest room, a sofa bed or daybed keeps both functions.

Budget tips

Spend on the chair and the light. Desks, shelves and decor can be simple — the style comes from color and arrangement more than price.

FAQ

Which direction should my desk face?

Ideally perpendicular to the window so daylight comes from the side, or facing into the room. Avoid sitting with a bright window directly behind your monitor.

What should be behind me on video calls?

A tidy bookcase, a piece of art or a plain wall with a lamp. Avoid a window behind you — it turns you into a silhouette.
