Living room ideas

The living room does the most jobs in the house. These ideas start with how you actually use it, then layer in style.

Start with the layout, not the sofa

Decide where the eye lands first: a window, a fireplace or the TV wall. Put the sofa facing it, then build a conversation zone around it. Seats should sit within about 8–10 feet of each other so people can talk without raising their voices.

  • Leave 30–36 inches for main walkways and about 16–18 inches between sofa and coffee table.
  • Float the sofa off the wall if the room is large — a console table behind it gives you a place for lamps.
  • Choose a coffee table about two-thirds the length of the sofa.

Pick a palette of three

One main neutral for walls and big upholstery (warm white, greige, soft grey), one secondary color for the rug and curtains, and one accent you repeat three times — pillows, a print, a vase. Repetition is what makes a room look designed instead of collected.

Light in three layers

Overhead light alone flattens a room. Add a floor lamp beside the sofa for reading and a table lamp or two at eye level for evening. Warm bulbs (2700K) make any style feel more inviting.

Get the rug size right

The most common mistake is a rug that is too small. In most living rooms an 8×10 rug lets at least the front legs of every seat rest on it, which ties the furniture into one group. A 5×7 floating in the middle makes the room look smaller.

Budget tips

  • Spend on what you touch every day: the sofa and the rug.
  • Save on side tables, art and decor — they are easy to swap later.
  • Curtains hung high and wide (near the ceiling, past the window frame) are the cheapest way to make a room feel taller.

FAQ

What is the best layout for a small living room?

Put the sofa on the longest wall facing the focal point, use one or two light armchairs instead of a second sofa, and pick a round or oval coffee table so walkways stay clear.

How can I redesign my living room for free?

Take a photo and upload it to Redecorly. It keeps your walls, windows and floor and shows the room in a new style in seconds, with the real pieces to shop.
